The profile of the school

The “Deutsche Schule Hadersleben“, “DSH“, is a comprehensive school. It comprises the classes from year zero (preschool) to year ten, but for the time being there are only classes from preschool to year nine. Right now there are 187 pupils who are being taught by 18 teachers.

The DSH is a school of the German minority and works according to the laws for Danish public schools. The German School and Language Association (Deutscher Schul- und Sprachverein) has published the guidlines for teaching and education at German institutions and they are the basis for the tasks at

school. And therefore it is certain that the pupils  impart in the principles of freedom and democracy which are the cornerstones for tolerance, equality and respect for others.

On the one hand the DSH wants to acquaint the pupils with the German language and culture and on the other hand it wants to prepare them as well as possible for their life in Denmark. For that reason the subjects German and Danish are taught at the level of the language skills of native speakers. Hence all pupils grow up bilingually.

The school has got an own day nursery (SFO) where pupils from form zero to form four are looked after by pedagogical staff from Monday to Friday from

6.30 am to 8.00 am and from 12.00 am to 4.30 pm.

The German School and Nursery Association (Deutscher Schul- und Kindergartenverein) is the local body for Hadersleben and surroundings. All the parents, whose children attend the DSH, are automatically members of that association. The fees for that membership are 500 Danish krones a year for each family. Out of the whole lot of parents the managing committee is elected which consists of eight members.

The managing committee runs the school politics in a wider sense. It is mainly responsible for finances, the buildings and for keeping the rules and laws that are effective for private schools.

School fees are not charged.

The school has got its own school kitchen, a gym, a room for handicrafts, a playground and a playing field. There are special rooms for the subjects music, needle work, arts, biology, physics and informatics/computer science.

And there is also a well equipped library which is made available for pupils and teachers as well.

The school disposes of an own transport system for its pupils.

Simultaneously to teaching the subjects German and Danish at the level of native speakers, we also try hard to give the pupils the greatest possible proficiency in English.

Apart from mathematics and informatics, creative subjects play a key role at our school.

After passing all the exams in year nine, Deutsche Schule Hadersleben hands out a Danish and a German leaving certificate which is accepted both in Denmark and in Germany.

The teachers at DSH take part in German and in Danish training courses.

The school is also very interested in close contacts to parents. During the year there are lots of events like parents´evenings, carnival, school leaving celebration, summer festival, walking in the streets while carrying a lantern and singing songs, doing handicrafts at an evening in the Advent season and our Christmas celebration, where we expect that parents take part in great numbers.

The basis for all our pedagogical efforts is the intensive and constant cooperation between pupils, parents and teachers. And only these three partners as a unity create our school.
